Teachers and Principals are primarily educators, yet when new classrooms are being designed we are asked to make decisions about buildings, room designs and furniture that will directly impact the learning of our students.
Where do teachers go to gain an understanding of the concepts that straddle both the education and architectural landscape?
INNOVATIVE LEARNING ENVIRONMENTS
Sometimes we don’t know what we don’t know. A critical and trusted educational advisor can be invaluable when major building works are occurring at your school. SCEC staff have worked extensively with Principals and Leadership Teams in helping to guide the decision making process for both large and small projects

INNOVATIVE LEARNING ENVIRONMENTS
SCEC wants to provide a space where individuals, groups or whole schools can explore, be inspired by and locate the research that will allow them to ask the right questions and confidently discuss concepts with architects, designers and furniture manufacturers.
SCEC also acts as a catalyst for pedagogical change within new learning environments. What comes first? The contemporary pedagogy or the new learning environments. The answer is never the same. SCEC can work with organisations to develop facilitation workshops for transitioning staff to contemporary pedagogies within innovative learning environments. Workshops include;
- Identifying the learning possibilities
- Planning for transition staff
- Delivering innovative pedagogies that are matched to innovative learning environments to that actually improve students outcomes
SCEC can provide resources for teachers and schools to support the identification, development and implementation of contemporary pedagogical practice. Comprehensive Case Studies and student work samples will give every teacher the opportunity to evaluate and enhance their own classroom practice.
SERVICES
SCEC provides a full range of services in the following areas:

PEDAGOGIES
One of the benefits of implementing Innovative Learning Environments is the opportunity to evaluate existing pedagogical practices, to identify the basis of those practices and to investigate other models not previously used. SCEC have collated resources for teachers to investigate alternative models within the discussion around innovative learning environments.
Conversations about pedagogy are always the starting point when we are discussing Innovative Learning Environments.
SPATIAL CONCEPTS
Can Spatial Awareness influence the way we use space? An awareness of the possibilities of using different spaces and of setting different expectations can allow us to get the best out of a particular space. Now, add to that, a developing awareness by the students of innovative spaces, why we use certain spaces and the benefits of furniture configuration and we have a sophisticated learning community. SCEC can support this conversation.
A reflection on the way we plan, design and use the spaces in our Innovative Learning Environment can significantly influence our classroom practice.

RESEARCH
SCEC has taken the hard work out of locating suitable and relevant research in Innovative Learning Environments. We have collated over 75 research papers into valuable categories. Mny of these papers have been selected because they are based on Australian or New Zealand contexts. The major overseas studies have been included when they are Literature Reviews or meta-studies. These papers have been collated over the last 5 years with extensive feedback from schools and Principals.
