What is Discovery Learning?
Discovery Learning is a technique of inquiry-based learning. Discovery Learning takes place in a problem-solving situation, experiential and 21st century learning environment. This theory encourages learners to build on past experiences and knowledge, to use their intuition and creativity and to search for new information in order to discover facts, links and form opinions.
To effectively use the Discovery Learning Method in a classroom, a teacher needs to have an understanding of how what the student discovers in class is educationally valuable and can lead to further investigations for them. Within Discovery Learning teacher guidance is encouraged only to build student’s own reasoning skills and to connect to their experiences on a topic. Teachers need to be able to direct young children, who are already curious about the world around them, to ask questions that will help them understand their surroundings.
